YouTube for Human Rights
November 25, 2008
When I lived in DC, I got the opportunity to work with Ashoka: Innovators for the Public. Ashoka opened my eyes to a whole class of people (“social entrepreneurs”) who work on creating novel and innovative solutions to some of the worlds most intractable social problems.
Yesterday I read about The Hub, Peter Gabriel’s participatory media site for human rights. While Peter Gabriel is not your typical social entrepreneur (he was a rock star!), The Hub is an excellent example of technological innovation being put towards the greater common good.
Through the Hub, individuals, organizations, networks and groups around the world are able to bring their human rights stories and campaigns to global attention and to mobilize action to protect and promote human rights.
Peter Gabriel describes it as the “YouTube for human rights” and has raised over $2 million in funding from Cinereach and the Omidyar Network.

Hello!
Thank you for mentioning Cinereach and the grants it has made to Witness. The link to our site does not seem to work in your post (it’s missing the www). If your readers would like to visit us, we can be found at http://www.cinereach.org.
Cheers!
